As seen in the Dayton Daily News on August 1, 2015.

My clients often ask me to take before-and-after pictures of the space we’ll be organizing. As I’m taking the photos on my phone, my mind is taking a different picture, a mental picture of them, not of their room.

They know after working with me, their room is going to change. I’m excited because I know they are about to change as a person.

I work with people who are feeling overwhelmed and have lost hope. They feel ashamed of their space, and it shows on them.

The mental before picture I take often shows a person whose eyes are downcast. Sometimes, those eyes are tear-filled. They don’t stand tall, and they move without purpose. They look unhappy.

After we organize their space, they see an organized room and can’t wait to share the after pictures with friends and family.

I see a confident person. My mental after picture is of a person looking at me right in the eye with a smile and sometimes tears, but the tears are different than the ones I saw earlier. I see someone who is hopeful, and it’s all because they took back their power over their stuff.

Although I love to change people’s spaces, what is most rewarding is watching them change.

Getting organized changes how you feel. That’s powerful. I want that for you.

It’s time you stop giving your stuff power over you. You’re letting it control your actions and your emotions. It’s just stuff. It’s time it takes a backseat, so you can accomplish what your unique self is here for.

Close your eyes and think about who you are today. The person you are right now. Don’t worry about who you were. As they say, that ship has sailed.

Now, think about who you want to become. When you open your eyes, keep that image of the new you in your mind.

The image of who you want to become needs to stay with you as you organize your space. When you know who you want to be, you’ll surround yourself with the stuff that will help you become that person.

When you begin to take the power away from your stuff, everyone in your life will notice your newfound confidence. Since your children look up to you, your confidence will set a positive example for them. Your friends will love your new confident attitude and will want to celebrate the changes with you. Even your business clients will be more confident in your abilities, thanks to the self-assurance you have gained.

Walk around your home or office right now and ask yourself, “Who’s more important, me or this stuff?”

You know the answer. Now, show your excess stuff the door and invite your new friend, Confidence, in.
