If you have stacks of paperwork taking over your home or office, it’s time you figure out a way to contain it.

A common reason why people don’t file is because their desks are attractive instead of productive. By this I mean it’s appealing to look at, but lacks file drawers or has drawers that do not properly support file folders.

If your desk fits this description, don’t despair. There are products on the market that can help you keep your papers in order.

Hanging file folder frame. If your desk has a drawer big enough for files, but lacks the hardware needed to hold hanging folders in place, purchase a drawer frame from an office supply store.

Frames come in letter and legal sizes. Measure your drawer, especially the height, before you order to ensure a proper fit.

You’ll need to assemble the frame after purchase. If the frame is too long for your drawer, follow the directions to remove the excess length of rod the folders rest on.

Rolling file cart. Bring your files right to your desk with a rolling file cart. It’s like having a file drawer right at your fingertips.

You’ll have to decide if you want open-style filing or a cart with a protective cover. Order one with a lock if you have a need to keep your paperwork secure.

These carts also work nicely if you like to work from the kitchen table or family room couch. Simply roll the cart into the room while you work and then hide it out of sight when you’re fin-ished.

I personally like the Elfa mesh file cart from The Container Store. Files are at the right height for filing from a chair or couch, and it has drawers to hold the office supplies needed while you work.

Rolling file cabinet. Functions just like a file cart, but looks like a small file cabinet.

File Boxes. The most common file boxes are plastic and come with a handled lid. They come in various sizes and can be found in office supply stores.

These boxes work well if you have limited filing drawer space, travel with your files or have a need to keep files grouped as a category.

Here are some ways I’ve suggested clients use their file boxes: Product warranty manuals, Home remodeling projects, Files for each child, Caregivers for their elderly parents’ paperwork, Special education teachers who visit various schools and Salespeople who commute with doc-uments.

Attractive file boxes are also available, which come in a variety of colors and materials.
